Conflict Management & Personal Safety

Violence and aggression in the workplace seems to be an ever increasing and shocking occurrence.

"Being abused, assaulted and injured at work. Is that part of the job?"

The store manager injured whilst detaining a shoplifter; the nurse punched by a drunk; the housing officer verbally abused and threatened; the bus driver spat at by rowdy youths; the teacher assaulted by a disruptive pupil; the social worker or gas meter reader or other lone worker taken hostage.

The list of scenarios is endless but demonstrates some of the additional pressures put up on our employees.

Many industries and organisations whose employees have to deal face to face with the public are realising the enormous problem that workplace violence has become.

Are you the Director, HR, Health & Safety or Security Manager. Has your organisation identified through risk assessment, that your staff face a potential risk of workplace violence. Have you taken reasonable steps to minimise or reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

S 2(2) Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, states "It is the employers responsibility to provide such information, instruction, training and supervision to support their duty of care. It is the employers responsibility to ensure that employees receive such information, instruction , training and supervision, as is necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of staff.

Not withstanding this legal responsibility, it should also be the moral obligation of every manager and director.
